Ford Canada sales overtake GM (3/2/2010)
Summary: Ford Canada sales overtake GM
Vehicles sales soared more than 50 per cent last month for Ford Motor Co. of Canada Ltd. (F-N12.450.040.32%) , from year-earlier levels, vaulting the auto maker into first place in February and for the year to date in Canada.
That performance puts Ford ahead of perennial market leader General Motors of Canada Ltd., which has been knocked out of first place during some individual months in the past two years, but has always led the annual rankings.
Meanwhile, Toyota Canada Inc. said Tuesday that sales for its Toyota division rose an estimated 24 per cent, while its Lexus brand posted its best February results on record.
That appears to indicate that Toyota Canada has so far shrugged off more than a month of adverse publicity surrounding three major recalls that have damaged its reputation for quality. The auto maker has also been criticized heavily by U.S. politicians. Akio Toyoda, chief executive officer of its parent company, Toyota Motor Corp. (TM-N74.260.620.84%) , came under heavy criticism from U.S. politicians at a House of Representatives committee hearing in Washington last week.
General Motors Co. said its U.S. sales rose 11.5 per cent last month from year-earlier levels.
